Island And Southampton Artists Unite For MNDA Charity Cassette Release

A compilation album featuring songs by artists from the Isle of Wight and Southampton is set to be released to raise funds for the Motor Neurone Disease Association (MNDA).

The album, MND Can Get In The Solent, is now available on limited edition cassette with a digital download, thanks to the efforts of Chalkpit Cassette Club and local musicians.

This includes the likes of Coach Party, The Bees, Plastic Mermaids, Paul Armfield and Musician and DJ, David Baker, who has been diagnosed with Motor Neurone Disease (MND).

David, the curator of the compilation, said:

“I grew up on the Isle of Wight and was in various bands prior to moving to Southampton.

"Over the years, I have met so many talented musicians, and after my diagnosis of MND, I have been given the opportunity to ask many of them to donate a song to this compilation.

"All profits will go to the Hampshire and Isle of Wight branches of the MNDA to fund research and support for fellow sufferers.”

MND affects up to 5,000 adults in the UK at any one time and there is a 1 in 300 risk of getting the disease across a lifetime.

It can affect adults of any age, but is more likely to affect people over 50.

Silas Gregory said:

“David is truly inspiring for the work he is doing while also managing his diagnosis.

"We are thrilled to be able to support David in putting together this compilation for such an important charity through the power of our local music community.”

David has raised nearly £10,000 so far through a Just Giving page and by doing DJ sets, gigs with his band Bobby I Can Fly, and a charity walk.

Another £10,000 has already been raised in David's name by friends and family running, swimming, walking, gigging, baking and quizzing to raise the funds for research, care and support for people living with, or affected by MND.

David Baker said:

“Thank you to Silas for allowing me to curate this compilation and for agreeing to all proceeds going to the MNDA.

"Thanks also to all the incredible artists for donating songs to the compilation and to Ellen Adams for the artwork.”

Jess Eastwood, frontwoman from Coach Party, added:

"We’re honoured to be part of this, and think David is an incredible musician and person.

"This is such an important charity, and it’s wonderful to see all of these Isle of Wight artists involved."
