Wight Warmers Knit-In Challenge Supporting Vulnerable Islanders This Christmas

Keeping the Isle of Wight warm is the goal of a new knitting challenge launching ahead of Christmas.

Islanders are being asked to grab their knitting needles to support vulnerable residents who are worried about the cold, and the cost of heating this winter.

Launched by the Isle of Wight County Press, and with the support of a host of charities, the Wight Warmers Knit-In Challenge encourages knitters, crocheters and sewing experts to get crafty, to create warm scarves, blankets and hats.

The aim is to get 200 items in time for Christmas. Niton’s Knit and Natter group is among those pledging items.

Through Island charities and organisations, including Aspire Ryde, Better Days Café, food pantries and the West Wight Sports and Community Centre, Islanders' clever creations will be distributed to people in need.

A number of drop-off points are in place across the Island. They include Hose Rhodes Dickson's eight Island locations and Aspire Ryde.

The organisation's Trevor Nicholas said:

"We are seeing the impact of the rise in heating costs daily at Aspire Ryde. This is a very welcome initiative to help keep people warmer this winter."

You can also get involved by using the hashtag #wightwarmers on social media.
