Victoria’s Family Day Out Returns To Osborne This Half-Term

This May half-term, families can enjoy a royally good day out at English Heritage’s sites on the Isle of Wight.

Victoria’s Family Day Out will return to Osborne this year by popular demand, transporting visitors back in time with traditional fairground fun.

Inspired by the recent Coronation, ‘Kid’s Rule!’ activities will also take place at Osborne and nearby Carisbrooke Castle throughout the week.

Victoria’s Family Day Out at Osborne kicks off on 30 May for three days.

The palatial seaside home of Queen Victoria and her beloved Albert will play host to old-fashioned thrills for kids and grown-ups alike.

Visitors will be able to try traditional fairground rides and games, including swing boats, helter-skelter and coconut shy, while listening to live music from the Victorian period performed by GreenMatthews.

There is plenty more to explore at Osborne, from the exquisite art collection inside the house to the private beach complete with Queen Victoria’s private bathing machine.

New for 2023 is a Family Tree Trail which explores 25 interesting trees on the estate, many of which were planted by the royal family themselves.

Over at Carisbrooke Castle, as well as Osborne, the kids are in charge with fun-filled ‘Kids Rule!’ activities on selected dates between May 27 and June 4, continuing the celebrations of King Charles III’s coronation.

This will offer a wonderful way for the whole family to get out on the Isle of Wight for half-term with hands-on activities and fresh-air explorations.

Children will be able to take part in a battle for glory at Carisbrooke Castle, with its have-a-go trebuchet game and stories behind the siege of the Castle and the role it played in the 100 Years War.

At Osborne, which was granted to the nation by Edward VII on his coronation day in 1902, lessons in Edwardian etiquette will be on offer.

Every child visiting will receive a celebration crown on arrival so they can feel like a King or Queen for the day.

The crown features an illustrated timeline of famous rulers, stretching from Emperor Hadrian all the way to Charles III.

David Bailey, English Heritage’s Head of Historic Properties for Hampshire and the Isle of Wight, commented:

“We’re delighted to welcome our Members and visitors to Osborne and Carisbrooke for the half-term holidays for what is shaping up to be a fantastic week of events.

"It’s always exciting to be able to bring history to life with Victoria’s Family Day Out.

"This year it will be extra-special this year alongside our Kids Rule! and coronation-themed activities at both English Heritage sites.”

Admission to both sites can be booked online.
