Two Newport Brothers Cycle From Scotland To East Cowes For Three Charities

The Earley Brothers

Today (Sunday) two Newport brothers are taking on a 500-mile cycle challenge from Scotland to East Cowes whilst raising funds for three good causes.

19-year-old Nicholas Earley was only 15 when he was diagnosed with Hodgkin Lymphoma in 2017. The disease returned and led to him needing a stem cell transplant a year later.

When he was in the hospital, he made the decision to cycle from Largs in Scotland to the Island, raising funds for East-Cowes based Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

He also wanted to raise money for the two hospital wards who looked after him during his treatment, Piam Brown and Teenage Cancer Trust.

The ride will see him and his brother, 22-year-old Matthew set off today and it aims to finish on September 3 at the Ellen MacArthur Cancer Trust.

Nicholas who works for Wight Mountain in Newport, said:

“My older brother Matthew decided he wanted to join me on the ride and so the planning and training began.

“Everything was all set to go ahead in May 2020; however, due to Covid restrictions at the time, the ride had to be postponed to May 2021. But we then had another postponed attempt, so finally, the ride is all set to happen on August 29.

“I’m a keen cyclist but Matthew is not so keen! We’ve been going out training two or three times a week and doing 40 or 50 miles a time, so we’re getting there.”
