Generous specs wearers on the Isle of Wight have donated thousands of glasses to charity over the years and this Christmas is no exception.
As the festive season approaches, the Island’s Specsavers stores have joined forces with Sight for Wight to recycle and distribute used glasses.
Catherine Kidd, retail director at Specsavers Isle of Wight, says:
"We have always collected glasses to be recycled and worked hard to ensure that they are donated to those who really need them.
"This partnership ensures that the specs that people bring in are recycled in the most responsible way while making sure that charities benefit."
Sight for Wight volunteers John and Pauline collect the glasses from each Specsavers opticians and are supported by teenage volunteers from the Duke of Edinburgh scheme to help manually sort the glasses.
The process involves removing the lenses and sorting the frames into branded, reading glasses by strength and general glasses.
Lisa Hollyhead, CEO at Sight for Wight, says:
"We are delighted to partner with the Isle of Wight Specsavers stores to support the recycling of their donated glasses.
"We have teamed up with two exit routes, a mainland recycling company, and the Lions Club recycling into Third World countries.
"The recycling company separates metal, glass, plastic and acrylic again, providing an income to the charity and ensuring a minimum of 84% of all materials are recycled.
"The branded frames and reading glasses are then sold to raise funds for the charity, mainly through Dress for Less at 57 Pyle Street, Newport. Any remaining glasses are recycled."
If you want to support the recycling scheme you can donate to the Specsavers store or head to Dress for Less and grab some specs to update your look and help support this local charity.
