The Royal British Legion will commemorate the 100th anniversary of Newport's St Thomas Square war memorial this weekend (Sunday).

The Newport and Carisbrooke branch are holding a small parade and service to mark 100 years since its dedication, on 16th September 1922.

Combined with this event is also the 100th anniversary of Cowes Sea Cadets and the 60th anniversary of Ryde Sea Cadets.

A small parade will form in St Thomas Square by Watson Bull & Porter, consisting of the Vectis Corps of Drums Marching Band, members of the 165 Port & Maritime Royal Logistic Corps (who have the freedom of Newport) along with Standard Bearers and contingents of Cowes Sea Cadets & Ryde Sea Cadets.

They will march to the war memorial for a short service at 2pm, which will include an act of remembrance and a small wreath laying ceremony. The service will be conducted by Rev. Janet Hallam.

In attendance on Sunday afternoon will be HM Vice Lord-Lieutenant Brigadier Maurice Sheen and Isle of Wight High Sheriff Mrs Kay Marriott, along with other dignitaries.

Following the service, the parade will reform and march away from the memorial with HM Vice Lord-Lieutenant taking a salute.
