Sandown Athletics Track And Stand Renamed In Memory Of Ray Scovell

The Fairway Athletics Track in Sandown has been officially renamed in memory of the Isle of Wight's 'Mr Athletics'.

The facility now proud sports the name 'The Ray Scovell Athletics Centre', after the legendary Island coach, who passed away last year (2021).

He coached a number of Island sporting stars, including hammer throwers Andy Frost and Paul Farley. He also coached Stephen Duff, who won gold and silver medals at the World Fire and Police Games in the US.

Ray said that he always wanted to get more children active in athletics and cross-country.

He also picked up Isle of Wight Radio's Volunteer of the Year award in 2014.

The grandstand at the site has been named after Ray's wife, Rosemary, who also sadly died last year.

A naming ceremony was hosted yesterday (Sunday) by their daughter, Claire Apsey and her son, Simon.

At the ceremony, Claire said:

"“Over the years, the track became dad’s second home. Those close to him have extra special memories...every step of the way, mum was the wind beneath his wings, whether it be supporting his latest fun-filled idea or scheme, to spending hours washing kit and making medals."
