Newport Town Centre Cordoned Off After Pedestrian Hit By Vehicle

Newport town centre has been cordoned off this afternoon (Monday) after a pedestrian was struck by a vehicle.

First reports of the incident came to light at around 3pm.

The street is closed off from McDonald's on Upper St James' Street towards and throughout the entire High Street.

Police, fire and ambulance teams are currently in attendance.

We have contacted the emergency services for further updates.

UPDATE 5pm

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:

"We are attending a serious collision in St James Street, which took place just after 3pm.

"The road has been closed, and we would urge people to avoid the area while emergency services respond."

The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire Service said:

"A crew from Newport Fire Station were called to assist Hampshire and Isle of Wight Constabulary and provide scene safety following a road traffic collision on St. James’ Street at 3.24pm. 

"Firefighters remain on the scene."
