Major Search For ‘Missing Swimmer’ Near Cowes Called Off

A major search for a ‘missing swimmer’ off Cowes has been called off as it’s believed they likely managed to get out of the water safely by themselves.

Bembridge, Ventnor and Needles Coastguard rescue teams, Yarmouth, Cowes and Calshot RNLI lifeboat, Gosport Independent Lifeboat, Wight SAR, the Coastguard Helicopter from Lee on Solent and Hampshire Constabulary all assisted in the search.

It was sparked after a member of the public called 999, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

They reported seeing a man swimming near the Red Funnel terminal, before losing sight of him.

In an update this morning (Sunday), a spokesperson for HM Coastguard said:

“After a thorough and extensive search, information gathered suggests that the possible missing swimmer likely exited the water himself and the search was terminated overnight.”

Emergency teams have now stood down from the incident.
