Latest Scam Alerts Issued For Isle Of Wight

More scam warnings have been issued by Trading Standards for the Isle of Wight this week.

Cost of energy scam

Scammers are yet again preying on our vulnerabilities – with the rising costs of energy they are sending texts purporting to be from GOV-UK advising you to click on a link to apply for your energy rebate.

This is a SCAM – you don’t need to do anything. If you get one of these texts you can forward it to 7726 where it will be used in intelligence gathering.

Amazon and Apple Pay

Texts have been received claiming to be from Amazon and Apple Pay advising you to click on a link — DON’T!

Unknown local numbers

Be wary of unknown callers on 01983 numbers – these WILL be scammers who have purchased unused phone numbers to carry out their activities.

We tend to be more trusting of a call from a local number but treat it with the same suspicion as you would any unknown caller.

Bank scam

Reports of emails from banks asking you to log in to change information and security details for online banking – NEVER click on links in emails particularly from banks.

If you receive an email like this and you are unsure if it is genuine always check with your bank in the first instance.

How to report scams

Scam texts can be forwarded to 7726.

Scam emails can be forwarded to report@phishing.gov.uk

If you receive a call purporting to be your bank you should hang up, wait 10 minutes then contact your bank by calling 159 and then select the correct option for your bank — this is  a secure way of verifying if it really was your bank contacting you.
