For the third year running, Binstead Primary School athletes will be flying the flag for the Isle of Wight at the Hampshire Indoor Athletics finals.
The 12-strong team (six boys and six girls, all aged 10 or 11) will be competing against the cream of Hampshire’s young athletes at the Mountbatten Centre, Portsmouth on Wednesday 26 March, as well as a team from Ryde School.
Each of them will compete in two running races, one throwing and one jumping event.
Stuart Harris, Deputy Head at Binstead, says the school is committed to excellence:
“Athletics is taught as part of our PE programme and we identify pupils who would benefit from the opportunities and who would be successful.
"They are invited to our after-school athletics club and, from that group, our team of 12 is chosen.”
Up to now, Binstead’s best place has been fourth, but the school is hopeful this year’s team can do even better in 2025.
Binstead Primary is a Wightlink Ferries partner school and the ferry company has supported the youngsters’ travel to the event.
Mr Harris says:
“We are grateful to Wightlink for the support. Initiatives such as this enable Island children to compete on a level playing field with their mainland counterparts.”
Sam Woodman, Wightlink Partnerships Marketing Manager says:
“Best of luck to the Binstead team from everyone at Wightlink.
"We are delighted to help them compete against the best in Hampshire at the Mountbatten Centre.”
Wightlink also supports the Isle of Wight Council Talented Athlete Scheme, which this year is backing 78 competitors, aged from nine to 86, across a range of sports.
