Isle Of Wight Bus Fares On The Rise After 'Reluctant' Price Hike

The cost of riding a bus on the Isle of Wight has gone up after Southern Vectis "reluctantly" increased its fares.

The firm has said it is "not a decision it has taken lightly" but claims it has no choice as the cost of running services has also risen.

Southern Vectis' announcement comes months before a Government scheme to cap fares at £2 comes into force.

Changes, which have already come into effect, will see single adult fares rise by 10p, 20p or 30p, depending on the journey.

While child singles have gone up on short hop trips (to £1.50), medium hops (to £2.10), and long hops (to £2.70).

Prices of period passes and multi-trip bundles have also seen increases.

A spokesperson for the bus firm said:

"The cost of running our bus services has significantly increased.

"This has meant we have had to review the cost of our fares, and have reluctantly increased some ticket prices.

"This is not a decision we have taken lightly. We have kept any prices rises to an absolute minimum."
