Islander Urged To Embrace National Recycle Week

The Isle of Wight Council is supporting Recycle Now’s national Recycle Week which runs until Friday.

Now in its 20th year, Recycle Week is a celebration of recycling across the nation, encouraging us into recycling more of the right things, more often.

This year’s theme, The Big Recycling Hunt, focuses on “missed capture” — the items that can be recycled but are commonly missed in the home.

These include empty aerosols, food tins, plastic cleaning and toiletry bottles, pots, tubs and trays.

Natasha Dix, the council’s service director for waste, environment and planning, said:

“We are definitely an Island of recyclers but we can all miss those the items around the house, forgotten in our kitchens, bathrooms, cupboards and bags.

“Our busy lives are full of things we could, and really should, recycle."

 Top tips for recycling:

  • Remember to recycle more of these items: aerosols, empty bleach bottles, air fresheners, empty shampoo and conditioner bottles, perfume bottles.
  • Rinse your food packaging/bottles/cans in your washing up water and pop in the recycling to prevent contamination.
  • Nappies should go in your household (black) waste, as can broken glassware. Just wrap it carefully to avoid the collection crew hurting themselves or dispose of it at your local household waste recovery centre.

Councillor Lora Peacey-Wilcox, Cabinet member for waste and recycling, said:

"Recycling plays a crucial role in improving our environment.

"As we participate in Recycle Week 2023, I encourage all residents to join us.

"By recycling correctly, we can collectively make a positive difference. Let's work together to create a cleaner and greener Island."
