Flood Alert Update Issued For Isle Of Wight

The Environment Agency has put a Flood Alert in place for the Isle of Wight's Eastern Yar this morning (Monday).

It says flooding is possible for: Eastern Yar and tributaries from Whitwell to Bembridge.

The alert states that water levels at Alverstone and Sandown on the Eastern Yar are rising following rain over the last 24 hours, with more than half a month's rain (46mm) recorded at Wroxall.

Levels will peak at Alverstone later today and continue to rise at Sandown.

This morning, the river will come out of bank at Whitwell High Street and Langbridge.

It will restrict access to Horringford and be close to the bank top at Alverstone, and by 12.30pm, it will flood Golf Links Road and Moreton Common Road.

This afternoon, levels will be high at Sandown Bridge, the sewage treatment plant and Fort Holiday Park and further rain is forecast.

While levels at Alverstone will fall, they likely will rise higher this evening and overnight, so be prepared for the river to be higher than normal for the next few days.

Properties are likely to flood but exact timings depend on the rainfall. If you live near the river, take action now to protect your property.

A further update is scheduled for around 4pm this afternoon.
