Fisherman Friend: Sam Hailed 'Hero' For Flood Efforts Across Isle Of Wight

A fisherman from the Isle of Wight has been hailed a 'hero' after assisting Islanders hit by flooding over the weekend.

Sam Loba, who alongside half a dozen friends offered free assistance to people on the Island, paid homage to those who assisted him over the course of a soggy and sleepless two days.

Social media comments paying tribute to the kind-hearted group included:

"People like you put faith back into humanity.

"You are all heroes without capes!"

Humble Sam, meanwhile, preferred to pay homage to those who assisted him in his mission to help others.

Posting on social media, he said:

"Newport & Carisbrooke Community Council stepped up and offered to pay all of our fuel costs, while Matthew Price from Price's Garage donated £100 cash.

"Reno Drain and Tesco duty manager Michelle gave us 500 bags to use as sand bags.

"Most importantly - (thank you) to all the wives, fiancés and girlfriends of the lads who’ve been out, for putting up with us being out 16-22 hours a day without complaint!"

Others involved in the rescue mission included Islanders Michael Sutton, Alex Gillies, Jamie Webster, Azzy Azinger, Ian Chappers, Jack Thomas, Wil Butler and Martin Legg - the latter opening his home as a soup kitchen.

This week will see Sam and co tackle debris caused by floods to try and lighten the load for Island Roads, this includes large amounts of stone and gravel at sites in Carisbrooke and Brighstone.

Any residents in need of help are asked to contact Sam via the Isle of Wight Community Information page on Facebook.
