Firefighters Tackling Field Alight Near Apse Heath

Firefighters are tackling a large field fire near Apse Heath this evening (Saturday).

Large plumes of smoke can be seen billowing in the skies around the area, including from the Garlic Festival site at Hale Common.

It’s understood a blaze broke out on an area of a field, situated between Apse Heath and Whiteley Bank.

Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service has confirmed crews are in attendance.

The blaze is now under control.

 

Crews from Newport, Sandown and Shanklin remain in attendance, having been called shortly before 5pm.

The field is off Bathingbourne Lane in Godshill.

The road has been closed while crews dampen down the area. 

A spokesperson for the fire service said:

“A water carrier from Ventnor is also on the scene assisting with tackling the fire involving approximately five hectares of grassland. 

“Hose reels and beaters have been used to tackle the fire, with it now surrounded. 

“Police have been requested to close the road with crews continuing to dampen down.”
