Fake Calls From Domestic General Reported On Isle Of Wight

Islanders have reportedly received bogus calls from Domestic and General claiming the insurance for one of their appliances has expired.

The caller attempts to force you into setting up a new policy before asking for your bank details.

Trading Standards says the Islander who fell victim to this became suspicious and hung up. They then contacted Domestic and General directly who confirmed it was a scam.

This can be quite a dangerous scam particularly if you already have domestic appliance/boiler insurance as the scammers will convince you that it needs renewing and then take payments from you.

You will also most likely end up paying for more than one policy, investigators discovered one victim in Dorset was paying for 48 of these policies!

There are also reports of the HMRC phone scam circulating on the Isle of Wight again but we are being warned that HMRC will never contact you in this way.

Trading Standards is urging Islanders to “be careful” when answering the phone.

If you have been affected by a scam you can report by contacting trading.standards@iow.gov.uk.
