East Cowes Residents Set For Tax Increase To 'Save Esplanade Paddling Pool'

Following the annual public consultation in October 2024, East Cowes Town Council has decided to increase the precept for 2024/25.

It says this is to save the popular Esplanade paddling pool, which requires urgent remedial work.

This is the first increase since April 2023 and will enable the Town Council to continue supporting the community’s priorities and tackling larger town projects as directed by the public consultation.

The precept for a band D property will rise by 30p a week.

This increase will fund urgent work on the Esplanade paddling pool, the reconstruction of the skatepark, and the refurbishment of the Esplanade toilets.

The public were asked if they would support a small increase in the precept to enable these projects, and the vast majority voted in favour.

An alternative budget that would not raise the precept was discussed. However, it was decided that the loss of the Esplanade paddling pool this year would be too great for the community.

In addition to the highlighted projects, the Council says it is planning new initiatives for the Esplanade this year.

During this term, the Town Council has also delivered the East Side Curve, which includes the library and community activities, the Community Orchard, a beach hut providing community facilities, a community market and community cinema, and improved accessibility at Jubilee
Recreation with a new path.

The Council has continued to provide additional services to the town despite cuts by the Isle of Wight Council.

Mayor Cllr Tracy Reardon of East Cowes said:

"We are committed to ensuring that East Cowes continues to thrive and provide essential services to our community.

"This precept increase is a necessary step to preserve beloved local amenities and support new, exciting projects for the future."

The precept is rising from £371,590.09 to £430,457.00.
