An 11-year-old had to be saved from drowning by lifeguards after falling off a groyne in Sandown.

Lifeguard teams say the boy, who couldn't swim, slipped and fell.

A lifeguard was quickly deployed with the rescue board and managed to pull him ashore.

He was treated at the Lifeguard Hut and advised of secondary drowning, as he had swallowed water.

Ryde Beach Lifeguards said:

"Please avoid walking or jumping off of the groynes, especially if you are not a strong swimmer and ensure you swim between the red and yellow flags!

"This incident was also outside the red and yellow flags, so the boy is lucky the lifeguard team were so vigilant and noticed."
