Culver's Redcliff Battery Wall Finally Falls

These remarkable images of a fallen Victorian battery onto Yaverland beach were captured by Jonathan Quayle, courtesy of Sandown Hub.

The remains of the structure now rest upon the beach, with a major clean-up operation in the pipeline.

Redcliff Battery was located to the west of the Culver Cliffs and east of Yaverland.

It is one of the many Palmerston Forts built on the Island to protect it in response to a perceived French invasion.

Construction of the battery began in April 1861 and was complete by September 1863 at a cost of £4,776.

Most of it had already fallen into the sea before the weekend collapse.
