
A crash involving a police van has closed roads in Sandown tonight (Thursday).

The incident has happened at the junction of Fitzroy Street and Leed Street. Both roads are closed.
A police van has suffered significant damage.
It’s understood a Mini was also involved.
The Hampshire and Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service confirmed they were called to the scene at 7.54pm.
Police and the ambulance service are also in attendance.
There is a heavy police presence in the area.
Southern Vectis buses are being diverted.
We have been advised of an RTI on Fitzroy Street in Sandown. As a result, routes 3 and 8 buses heading towards Ryde are unable to serve the stops on Melville Street. Buses will instead divert via The Broadway to reach Station Avenue and normal line of route.

A spokesperson for Hampshire Constabulary said:
“We are currently dealing with an RTI in Fitzroy Street/Leed Street in Sandown between a police van and a Mini, the road will be closed for a while.
“It appears the police vehicle was on normal patrol and the mini has allegedly failed to stop at a give way.
”The driver of the Mini has been arrested on suspicion of drink/drug driving.
“The passenger of the Mini has been taken to hospital.
“Two police officers have been taken to hospital.
“All next of kin have been notified.”
