Cowes Teen Accused Of 'Researching Isle Of Wight Festival As Terror Target'

A 15-year-old boy from the Isle of Wight, charged with a terror offence, allegedly researched the Isle of Wight Festival as a potential target.

The teenager, from Cowes, appeared at Westminster Magistrates Court this morning (Monday).

He stood accused of planning a so-called Islamic State-inspired terror attack. He denied the charge of preparation of terrorist acts under Section 5 of the Terrorism Act 2006.

The Evening Standard reports the 15-year-old allegedly had a knife in his rucksack when he was arrested by counter-terrorism police last Monday (11).

It followed a tip-off from the FBI that he was planning to attack a non-believer who he thought had insulted Islam, Westminster Magistrates’ Court heard.

Prosecutors say he researched the Isle of Wight Festival, which was attended by around 90,000 people and featured acts including Lewis Capaldi and Kasabian, the reports states.

The youngster, who cannot be named for legal reasons, is said to have developed an interest in extreme Islam and supported Isis ideology.

As well as carrying out online research into a location to commit an attack, the Evening Standard says the youth is said to have looked at weapons, including firearms, vehicles and a stab vest.

He is also said to have obtained a knife and written notes, including an alleged martyrdom note entitled To My Family.

As Isle of Wight Radio reported yesterday (Sunday), he was detained following a joint effort from Counter Terrorism Policing South East (CTPSE) and Hampshire Constabulary. He was charged yesterday.

He has been remanded in into youth detention accommodation.

He is due to appear at the Old Bailey on August 19.
