Cancer Survivors Ask Islanders To Join Them To Race For Life

Three Isle of Wight mums who formed an unbreakable bond while supporting each other through breast cancer are calling on fellow Islanders to help others facing the disease, by taking part in Race for Life.

Thanks to research, Emma Clemens, 45, Emma Eaglen, 38, and Justine Hamer, 48, have all beaten cancer and will be heading to the mainland this summer to take part in the Race for Life 10k.

They say the fundraiser which includes the 3k, 5k, 10k and Pretty Muddy adults and children events at Southampton, Portsmouth, and Poole, feels like one big community uniting against cancer.

Justine said:

“As we have found out, everybody knows somebody who will be affected by cancer and I don’t think there can ever be too much research into it.

“I know, having been on the receiving end of amazing care, how important it is to continue finding better treatments, smarter techniques to detect cancer and new ways to prevent it.

"Race for Life is such a fun way to fundraise towards that and something we’ll always do together.”

Cancer Research UK’s Race for Life, in partnership with headline sponsor Standard Life, is an inspiring series of 3k, 5k, 10k, Pretty Muddy and Pretty Muddy Kids events which raise millions of pounds every year to help beat cancer by funding crucial research.

This is the 30th year of Race for Life and participants will receive a special medal to mark the milestone.

Every year around 54,100 people are diagnosed with cancer in the South East and around half of people in the UK born after 1960 will get cancer in their lifetime.

Money raised at Race for Life enables scientists to find new ways to prevent, diagnose and treat cancer - helping to save more lives.
