W&B Lose First League Home Match For Six Years As Shanklin Go Top

Whitecroft and Barton suffered their first league defeat in six years, as Shanklin went top of Division One.

The sides went into the match level after taking maximum points in their first four games of the season.

W&B started brighter and had chances to go ahead in the first half, before Shanklin grew into the game.

The sides couldn’t be separated at half time, but it didn’t take long for Shanklin to take the lead after the break.

Striker, Kyle Drew, danced his way into the box before being brought down by W&B goalkeeper, Gareth True. Shanklin captain, Iain Seabrook, stepped up to put the visitors ahead, slotting low to the ‘keeper’s left.

A quick-fire second followed when Sam Moseley lost his man and crossed for George Carter-Knight to slot home from inside the six-yard box.

W&B pushed forward and won penalty when Josh Appell tumbled inside the Shanklin box, after pressure from Wayne Newnham, which was calmly converted by Joe Rayner.

A stunning save late on from Shanklin goalkeeper, Dan Ward, edged Shanklin over the line and inflicted W&B’s first home league defeat for six years - to send the visitors top of the table.

Speaking after the game, Shanklin Manager, Paul Haward said:

”It was a superb for us against the reigning champions.

“I’m really proud of the players involved and the support for the boys during and after the game was exceptional.

”I’d also like to congratulate W&B for their incredible league run they’ve had at home over the last five years. It took a strong Shanklin side to end that run.”
