Veterans Turn Out To Mark Sandown And Shanklin Rugby Club Anniversary

Sandown and Shanklin RFC’s 60th anniversary year launched with a walking rugby match, featuring a host of players from years gone by.

A squad of 41 Hurricanes ‘super veterans’ aged 60 or older, including 13 players in their seventies, laced up their boots once more, for a series of three 20 minutes playing periods on Saturday (9).

The Over 60s team fielded a who’s who of past stars, including eight former 1st XV captains, from the past 50 years.

In opposition were a Hurricanes side of youthful Under 60s players, some of whom are still playing for the club in competitive Hampshire league fixtures.

Of note, were brothers Peter (under 60s) and Simon Swallow and father and son Gary and Tom Buckingham who propped against each other.

Walking rugby, growing in popularity, remains physically competitive and requires skills and deftness of touch less obvious in the full speed game. Strict playing protocols were in place to ensure the wellbeing of all, marshalled expertly by Hampshire RFU referee Elys Norman, and with medical support close at hand from Wight Event First Aid.

Over 60s were (relatively) quick to take advantage from kick off, putting pressure on the Under 60s defensive lines. Former professional rugby league player, Terry Bilsbury, showed his class with a grubber kick and pick up to touch down under the posts in the first period.

Under 60s players rallied and adopted a more direct approach, punching holes in the older team’s forward pack, recycling quickly, and releasing a slick handling back line. Tries for Greg Dean (2), Bob Simpson, and a dramatic corner dive from Colin Potter stretched the lead for the youngsters.

Despite valiant attempts, Over 60s were unable to stem the flow. A fine touchdown by Dale Wensley extended the younger side’s lead, converted by Tom Buckingham.

In the final minute, the Over 60s were denied what would have been a cracker of a consolation try when David Stowe was held up just short of the line. The final score 27-5 to the Under 60s.

With Sandown and Shanklin fielding full 1st XV and 2nd XV fixtures at Bognor RFC on Saturday, over 100 current and former players represented the Hurricanes, home and away, on the same day.

Prior to the game a one-minute period of silence was observed by both sides, respected by almost 70 veteran players, and many more spectators, in memory of former teammates who have passed away.

The event raised funds for Prostate Cancer charities.

Final score:

Over 60s - 5

Under 60s - 27
