'Urgent' Appeal To Display Isle Of Wight Children’s Hand Made Remembrance Day Poppies

An ‘urgent’ appeal has launched to find a location that could display thousands of poppies handmade by Isle of Wight children next month (November).

As previously reported, The Royal Marines Association on the Isle of Wight is taking part in a 75 day long campaign to tidy up war graves on the Island.

Isle of Wight youngsters are being asked to play their part and make a poppy, which will be displayed on Remembrance Sunday when the campaign ends.

It was hoped that they would be displayed at Shanklin Chine, however concerns about the weather has resulted in an urgent appeal to find an inside location.

20 Isle of Wight Primary Schools have agreed to take part and the indoor location would need to be able to display the flowers for the first two weeks of November.

Terry Goodwin, Branch Secretary for the Royal Marines Association on the Isle of Wight told Isle of Wight Radio:

“Part of this tidy up is a poppy flower display that will be created by Isle of Wight school’s primary children. We are planning to get it completed by Remembrance Sunday so we are looking for a space for the first two weeks in November.

“My concern with Shanklin Chine is the weather - I am really worried the weather could destroy the display before we have set it up. With all the hard work the children are going to put into this - it would be a disaster basically - so to be on the safe side we are looking for an indoor location.”

“If anyone could help us I would be really obliged, at present we have nowhere to go and the children are - as I speak - making these flowers so time is not on our side.”

The Sandown ladies sewing club is planning to make a large centrepiece poppy which will also be displayed among the smaller ones.

Meanwhile, to support Isle of Wight School’s the Royal Marines Association has created a crowdfunding page for the participating Isle of Wight Schools, to help fund their future education.
