Two teams of coastguards used a rope system to search cliff faces on the Isle of Wight on Saturday (July 10) after reports of a possible casualty.

The alarm was first raised by a member of the public at about 2.50pm, concerned about a person they had observed at the cliff edge, high above the shoreline at Blackgang.

H.M. Coastguard staff from Bembridge and Ventnor attended the area, on the Island's south coast, soon after.

They said they conducted a search, but by 8pm reported that no casualty had been found.

The cliff tops are appreciated for the view they provide over the English Channel, and the Back of the Wight — but they have been heavily eroded, with the edges liable to collapse.
