Police Officer Attacked And Injured Near Sandown Beach

A police officer has been injured while arresting a man in Sandown this afternoon (Sunday) after reports of threats and a person having an offensive weapon.

Police said the assault happened after they were called to Yaverland Road, by Sandown Beach, at 12.53pm.

A 48 year-old man from Derby, was arrested — but, while being detained, is said to have tried to resist arrest.

During the operation, a police officer was assaulted, leaving them needing hospital treatment for a serious wrist injury.

A man was detained on suspicion of possessing a weapon, resisting arrest, and assaulting a police officer.

On Sunday evening, he remained in custody.

Detective Sergeant Steven Norridge, said:

“This was a busy beach with many people enjoying the weather.

"We are appealing to anyone who was in the area at the time and had any direct interactions or conversations with this man to come forward and speak to us to help with our investigation.

"Anyone with any information or who may have witnessed the incident is asked to contact police on 101, quoting CMP 0973 of July 18”.

*Isle of Wight Police on Facebook said:

"The male that assaulted the officer is still in custody.

"We have since found out he is wanted for a more serious offence so he has been here all night whilst we continue the investigation."
