Petition Aims To Put Brakes On Parking Charges At Isle Of Wight Esplanades

Controversial plans to implement all-year-round parking charges on some of the Isle of Wight's esplanades are due to be discussed by the Isle of Wight Council's Cabinet.

The proposals - which were approved as part of the local authority's budget in February - would see charges extended on esplanades at Sandown, Shanklin, Ventnor and Cowes.

They are currently in force between March 1 to October 31.

All-year-round charges are also set to come into place between Egypt Esplanade, Cowes and Princes Esplanade, Gurnard.

A petition against the plans has so far attracted more than a thousand signatures. It lists a number of concerns, including the potential damage charges could cause to local businesses and their staff.

It also argues changes will cause congestion and be 'disproportionate to traffic flow'.

The petition reads:

"I believe that the proposed charges show the council in a poor light.

"Instead of supporting local businesses and protecting the mental and physical well-being of its residents, it is intending to introduce charges in an area where it is very unclear whether there would be any financial benefit to doing so."

As part of changes, a flat rate payment of £2 at the Somerton Park and Ride in Cowes also looks set to be introduced.

The Isle of Wight Council says the proposals were subject to public consultation - and will now be considered by Cabinet members.

Changes to pay and display parking prices on-street - and off-street in long and short stay car parks - are already being implemented, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

The council expects them all to be in place by November 1.
