Nina To 'Milk' Debut Single Thanks To Plastic Mermaids Inspiration

An Isle of Wight singer will release her debut single next month — having been inspired by one of the Island's most popular bands of recent years.

The public will get to hear 'Milk' by Nina Ross for the first time on April 7.

The track is a cover of Plastic Mermaids' song of the same name — with a link between the two versions provided courtesy of drummer Chris Jones, who provides percussion on both.

Nina delivers a pure, stripped-back, melancholic version of the song with intimate, jazz/folk vocals leading the listener into a down-tempo electronic inspired track.

The song is about witnessing someone you love flounder in the face of hidden hurt and the difficult circumstances and emotions surrounding that.

Nina said:

"The band released an acoustic version of the song in lockdown and as soon as I heard it I was transfixed by its emotional strength and vulnerability — I just knew I wanted to sing it.

"I connected with the experience of hiding emotions away and the impact of that on others.

"It gives me huge pleasure to share their amazing music too, I’m a massive fan"

Nina collaborates with bassist and composer, Jon Thorne who produces the track.

Musically, while jazz trained, she also brings into play influences from folk, indie, art-pop, trip-hop, electronica and a childhood history as a classical singer.

Milk will be available from Friday April 7 on all streaming platforms.
