Newport Will Be Dancing On Ice This Christmas

Get your skates on! An ice rink is coming to Newport this Christmas.

On November 20, Islanders of all ages are invited to have a go on the rink, and take part in a disco, for free.

It's part of a host of events held by Newport and Carisbrooke Community Council (NCCC) to celebrate the festivities.

The rink, which will have synthetic ice, will be based at the car park at Newport Quay (Newport Harbour South Car Park).

A spokesperson for the NCCC said:

"There will even be free push-along penguins as well as skate aids available for youngsters or less confident skaters to use.

"Throughout the day in St Thomas’ Square and St James’ Square, there will be live entertainment and performances from Sandown & Shanklin Military Band, Steve Love, Vectis Brass, Emily Wild, Jukebox Jazz, Harmonix, Abbey Brass, The Combined School Choir, Medina Marching Band, Magic from Huxley, Balloon Modelling from Tracy’s Faces, The Grinch, The Snostoppin Huskies and MUCH MORE..

"Santa has even taken some time out of his busy schedule and will be stopping by the Minster in St Thomas Square from 12 to 2. Each child that visits Santa will receive a FREE gift!"

There will also be a chance to pose for photos with living statues, which will be performing throughout the day. Celebrations will be followed by a finale at 6pm.

Newport's Christmas lights will be switched on at St Thomas' Square. Actress Sue Hodges (best known for her role as the waitress Mimi Labonq in the BBC sitcom 'Allo 'Allo!) and Pippa the life-size Polar Bear will do the honours this year.

If you would like to book a half an hour slot to have a go on the ice rink, you will want to get your skates on as it is expected to be popular.

Bookings can be made by emailing vikki.wright@newportwight.org.uk.

It is the second ice rink already confirmed to be coming to the Island this Christmas. As Isle of Wight Radio exclusively revealed, Yarmouth will welcome one for a week and a half.
