London Boy Dedicates Isle Of Wight NHS Fundraiser To Duke Of Edinburgh

Carlos- Ricardo Gomes-Foster

As a personal tribute to the Duke of Edinburgh, a 14-year-old boy is running across the Isle of Wight - whilst also raising money for NHS Charities Together.

Next month (May), Carlos-Ricardo Foster-Gomes will start his 36km run from Bembridge Lifeboat Station - finishing at The Needles.

Both Carlos-Ricardo’s parents work for the NHS in London and he wants to play his part to raise some money, after their efforts during the pandemic.

He chose to do the fundraiser on the Isle of Wight because his stepfather is from the Island, and the family has fond memories of visiting beaches and eating lunch at The Crown Inn!

The 14-year-old, who is also a young cadet, says he is dedicating his fundraiser - which is also part of his Bronze Duke of Edinburgh Award - to Prince Philip, who died last week (Friday).

In future, Carlos-Ricardo is also hoping to complete the Silver and Gold Duke of Edinburgh Awards.

He expressed his gratitude for the scheme, which has given him motivation during the pandemic to exercise and train two to three times a week.

He told Isle of Wight Radio:

“My parents both work in the NHS and I felt like I had to do my part and raise money. I think the (Duke of Edinburgh) scheme has helped me to achieve my goal. I train every two to three days. So far I have managed to raise £360.45…

“Thank you to all the Islanders and William and Harry are most welcome to join me on my run!”

He takes on the challenge on Friday 28 May.
