The Isle of Wight has been named as the favourite island for English holidaymakers.
Musement, the digital discovery and booking platform for travel activities and experiences around the world, has conducted a study to reveal each European country’s favourite island destination.
Musement analysed Google search volume data for 200 European islands (excluding island countries) in 44 European countries and produced a map with the results.
Britain’s favourite islands
Whilst the UK’s travel green list remains slight, a staycation may be on the cards for many in the UK this summer. Thankfully Britain boasts some amazing islands, and if you’re lucky with the weather, the UK’s islands can just about rival those of the Caribbean.
The Isle of Wight, the largest island in England, is the most popular island holiday destination for the English.
Musement said:
"It’s mild climate, varied coastline and relaxed atmosphere make it the perfect place for a seaside holiday."
In a similar vein, the Welsh also prefer a domestic island escape. And with scenic coastlines, stunning beaches, diverse wildlife and picturesque towns, it comes as no surprise that Anglesey is the most popular island among the Welsh.
In contrast, search data from Scotland, Ireland and Northern Ireland indicates that these nationalities prefer something a little more exotic.
Scotland’s most searched for island was the sun kissed Spanish island of Tenerife, interestingly the two also share a flag of very similar resemblance. Sticking with the Canaries, Ireland’s favourite isle was Lanzarote, while the Northern Irish prefer the Greek charm of the island of Santorini.
The most popular islands in Europe
Despite being the smallest island in size to make the list, Santorini is the most popular throughout Europe. Renowned for its dramatic views, romantic sunsets, volcanic sand beaches, wineries and award-winning restaurants, it’s no wonder that it is the most searched for island in 11 countries.
Part of the Canary archipelago, Tenerife comes in second place and is the most sought-after island in Belgium, Iceland, Latvia, Moldova, Scotland and Spain itself.
In joint third place, comes Crete and Sardinia. The largest and most populous of the Greek islands, Crete is favoured in Lithuania, Poland and Ukraine. Featuring heavenly beaches, quaint villages, and historic sites it’s easy to see why. Sardinia, on the other hand, is not only the most searched island in Italy, but also in Austria and Liechtenstein.
