Isle Of Wight MP Votes Against Free School Meals Extension

The Isle of Wight's MP is one of 322 who have voted against plans to extend free school meals for children.

Bob Seely has come under fire on social media after he helped to defeat the motion last night (Wednesday).

The campaign, headed by Manchester United footballer Marcus Rashford, called for food vouchers to be made available during school holidays.

The scheme had been allowed to continue through the summer with a “Covid food fund” after Rashford forced the government into a U-turn.

A bid to extend it was defeated by a majority of 61 votes in the House of Commons. The Government insists it is investing in the welfare system to support the most vulnerable families.

Labour MPs have criticised the decision, with one - Richard Burgon - calling it "sickening".

After last night's vote, Mr Seely took to Twitter, sharing a video on how the Government 'has helped families on low incomes' accompanied with a thumb emoji.

Mr Seely has yet to respond to Isle of Wight Radio's request for a comment.
