Improved Access At Brading Down Local Nature Reserve

Funding from the Isle of Wight Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty’s Access Fund has enabled local charity Gift to Nature to improve access for disabled visitors to Brading Down Local Nature Reserve.

Gift to Nature has been working with Isle Access to improve accessibility across their portfolio of 31 sites.

Brading Down was identified as a place where access could be improved.

However, the scheduled monument status of most of the car park, and lack of funding, had prevented changes.

Fortunately, the western most car park (Newport end) lies outside the designated area and so the Gift to Nature rangers have installed a gate wide enough to accommodate wheelchair, pushchair and mobility vehicle access.

In addition, seating has been built which permits anyone, regardless of their level of mobility, to sit and chat or share a picnic.

Graham Biss, Managing Director of Natural Enterprise, said:

“One of our key aims is to make our sites more accessible to everyone and we hope these improvements will benefit all.

"Brading Down offers a spectacular view of the surrounding area. We are very grateful to the Isle of Wight AONB for their support”
