Firefighters have slammed 'foolish and reckless behaviour' in Freshwater in what's been described as an 'arson attack'.

Crews were called to bins and grass on fire at Freshwater skate park last night (Wednesday).

The intensity of the flames and smell from the burning suggested an accelerant such as petrol had been used to start the fire, according to the Friends of Freshwater Fire Station.

Crews used hose reel jets to extinguish the fire and damp down the area. Damage was also caused to the 'muga' fencing where paint had started to bubble and melt from the heat.

Firefighters also said there was evidence that an attempt had been made to set fire to a separate bin stack around five metres from the fire.

The Friends of Freshwater Fire Station said:

"This really is foolish and highly dangerous behaviour that spoils the areas created for our young people to enjoy.

"If anyone has information about this incident please contact our local neighbourhood police team."
