Eyes To The Sky For Isle Of Wight Steam Railway’s 1940s Experience

The 1940s Experience returns to the Isle of Wight Steam Railway for the weekend of July 2 and 3.

As an extra special treat for visitors to the event, this year the Railway will host flypasts from the Battle of Britain Memorial Flight on both days.

Taking to the sky on Saturday will be the iconic Supermarine Spitfire, which is scheduled to fly over Havenstreet at 3pm — this symbol of the second World War is renowned for its role in the Battle of Britain.

The following day will see a mighty Hurricane — one of only 12 airworthy examples in existence — perform a fly-past over the railway at 1.40pm.

“We’re delighted to welcome these two famous aircrafts to the Railway”, explains General Manager, Steve Backhouse.

“They should be a very fitting addition to this ever-popular event.”

The 1940s Weekend has a long-standing place in the Railway’s Special Events calendar.

Visitors can expect a wide selection of period displays and stalls and an extensive collection of military vehicles.

There will be steam trains running throughout the day, with tickets enabling travellers to unlimited travel throughout their visit.

In addition, there will be live entertainment from Old Time Rags — a duo comprising one-man-band Laurence Marshall and award-winning step dancer Phoebe Douthwaite.
