Covid-Related Staff Absence Cancels 72 Red Funnel Sailings

Coronavirus-related staff absence has led to a further 72 Red Funnel sailings being cancelled.

The ferry firm says around 30 per cent of its operational staff are currently unavailable to work, with many being contacted by the NHS Test and Trace system or self-isolating.

Dozens of crossing have been cancelled across two weeks - including the first week of the school Summer Holidays.

The following vehicle sailings on July 20, 21 and 22 and the following week on July 27, 28, and 29 will be cancelled:

Departures from Southampton (Tues-Thurs):

  • 05:00
  • 08:00
  • 11:00
  • 14:00
  • 17:00
  • 21:00

 Departures from East Cowes (Tues-Thurs):

  • 06:30
  • 09:30
  • 12:30
  • 15:30
  • 18:30
  • 22:30

The cancellations mean the last opportunity to depart the Island on all the affected days will be 9pm.

Red Funnel says the changes will allow colleagues to be redeployed to supplement Friday to Monday services, as well as provide more bandwidth for teams to be able to recruit and train new team members.

The company says a "strong" recruitment effort is underway, but current low numbers of staff affects its ability to load and unload ferries quickly.

Just this week 24 sailings had to be cancelled, as Isle of Wight Radio previously reported.

CEO, Fran Collins, said:

"I am very sorry that these actions have been necessary and we thank our customers for their continued patience and understanding as we continue to do the best we can to keep sailing during these challenging times. I also extend thanks to our incredible teams who are working very hard to provide more certainty to our customers and minimise the impact on local traffic. We will continue to review our schedule regularly and keep customers informed should any further changes be necessary."

On the affected dates, Red Funnel's freight ferry, Red Kestrel, will run but on a revised timetable. Sailings will depart 34 minutes later, meaning they'll leave Southampton at 04:59, 07:59, 10:59 and East Cowes at 06:29, 09:29, 12:29.
