As flooding starts to subside on the Isle of Wight, the true extent of yesterday’s (Sunday’s) bad weather has been revealed.

Binstead was among the areas worst affected by heavy rainfall, as residents banded together to prevent properties from going underwater.

Isle of Wight Radio was there to witness the community-effort.

Makeshift fences, buckets, brooms and sandbags were aplenty as the village battled against what the Isle of Wight Met Service says was between 40 and 50mm of rainfall.

Water had run through houses and gardens, leaving Binstead Road underwater.

It took firefighters from Hampshire and the Isle of Wight Fire and Rescue Service to pump away water from affected houses.

Director of Operations for the fire service, Dan Tasker, said:

"Fortunately, we have not been required to respond to any incidents involving lives at risk. A big thank you to the public for pulling together and looking out for one another during these difficult times."

Houses weren't the only buildings affected in Binstead. The Post Office and The Fleming Arms were also hit, with the latter currently closed.

Lynnbottom Tip and Havenstreet also bore the brunt of the bad weather.

In Havenstreet, a landslide caused drains under the bridge to block.

Police and members of the community managed to clear the road, as well as divert traffic.

This morning, the clear-up begins for homes and businesses. Robin Hill is shut until at least 1pm for repair works.

A flood alert remains in place for the Eastern Yar at Whitwell, Wroxall, Langbridge, Alverstone and Ryde Monktonbrook.

Binstead

The Environment Agency says there was around 52mm at Wroxall. A spokesperson said:

"We expect the river will peak around 09:00 today, it could rise another 3cm in that time. Whilst flood water is surrounding property, it is possible that internal flooding could just, by the smallest margin, be avoided, with impacts being more similar (but a little deeper) to those recorded at the end of June."

Drivers are also urged to take care on the roads.

An obvious post, if you are out and about please be careful - due to the sudden deluge of rain, We are receiving numerous reports of lifted inspection covers and flooding. Travel safe, Jason
