Chaos Continues In East Cowes With York Avenue Resurfacing Works Delayed

York Avenue

Isle of Wight Radio has been told York Avenue resurfacing works are delayed tonight (Thursday).

Sources close to Isle of Wight Radio say plans to resurface the road overnight for the next six nights have been postponed.

It is understood the weather is to blame.

As a result, York Avenue will remain closed for another 24 hours and not open as planned this evening.

Island Road correspondence to members of the local authority, seen by Isle of Wight Radio, states:

'The resurfacing works, as you are aware, are currently scheduled to commence this evening.  The scheme is scheduled for 6 shifts to be carried out overnight on week days only (therefore, scheduled to complete on 24 June).

'However, with all resurfacing works, these are weather dependent and unfortunately the forecast is not looking favourable.

'York Avenue will remain under a 24 hour road closure for the duration of the resurfacing element of this scheme for safety reasons.'

A spokesperson for Island Roads has told Isle of Wight Radio:

'While the weather can affect the programme (as wet conditions can compromise the effectiveness of materials) it is currently our intention to undertake resurfacing tonight.The programme is kept under review and we will issue an update if the schedule changes.'

As previously reported by Isle of Wight Radio, a Weather Warning for rain and wind is in force for the Isle of Wight today.

Meanwhile, Southern Vectis is not running buses along Old Road due to a number of low-level trees, so the bus stop outside Waitrose has been moved to Clarence Road by School Hill Road junction.

As first reported, a Southern Water leak has also shut Clarence Road, Island Roads has closed the road.  Drivers will be diverted up Old Road.

* UPDATED 12.51pm

Isle of Wight Radio has been told Southern Vectis will return to use the route into East Cowes on Old Road.

The temporary bus stop has been reverted.

* UPDATED 1.34pm

Clarence Road has been shut.

Cllr Karl Love is urging Islanders to avoid the town centre.
